Description
The Gulf of Kvarner is formed by the Istrian peninsula and the Velebit massif on the mainland. It embraces the islands of Cres, Krk, Rag and Lošinj. The island of Krk is the most developed and urbanized, being close to the mainland and linked by a bridge. The town of Opatija developed rapidly at the end of the 19th century as a holiday resort for the Central European elite. It proudly boasts Secession-style palaces and Croatia's longest seafront promenade. The port of Rijeka is one of Croatia's economic arteries.
Istria on its peninsula is a special world, marked by a blend of Croatian and Italian cultures, as illustrated by the town of Rovinj. It boasts a rich terroir, characterized in particular by truffles. Its heritage goes back to antiquity and, as is often the case in Croatia, is exceptionally well-preserved, having been used to this day, such as the Roman amphitheatre in Pula or the Basilica of Euphrasius in Poreč.
