Description
Zagreb was once a crossroads of trade routes between the continent and the sea, as well as a gateway from Central Europe to the Balkans. Its fair was famous in the Middle Ages. For many years, it was the most easterly Catholic bishopric in Europe, hence the originality of its fortified cathedral. The city's history is marked by the opposition between Kaptol Hill, the ecclesiastical seat, and Grič Hill, the center of secular power, which grew with the city to become the capital of Croatia. Zagreb is a green city with many parks and street events throughout the year. It was also an important artistic center, and we recommend a visit to its museum of Croatian naive art.
The region is bucolic with beautiful vineyards, notably Plešivica. It is also renowned for the quality of its thermal waters.
